Tackling Your Landscaping Throughout The Year
Landscaping is a job for all seasons, and there's much to do throughout each part of the year to keep everything growing in good shape. If you look at it as one big ongoing job, landscape maintenance can seem pretty intimidating. However, if you break your landscaping care down by season, it's much easier to determine which goals need to be met and when. Focusing on the major milestones that need to meet each season and ticking them off of your to-do list one by one can take your landscaping care from stressful to simple!
Spring
Spring is one of the busiest times of year for landscaping! As everything emerges from its winter dormancy and starts to grow out again, there's a lot to catch up on.
First off, if you have any deciduous shrubs that you hadn't planted in the previous season, make sure to get them in the ground before the end of March. Shrub planting is best done while the weather is still cold so that the roots can have time to develop before growth really takes off in the summer.
Your biggest focus, however, should be on spring cleaning. This is a perfect time to remove leaves and dead debris, so it doesn't impede the growth of your lawn and gardens. It's time to pull weeds, put down new mulch, and check to make sure your irrigation systems are in good condition. And of course, you can't forget your lawn! It's time to hit it with a good spring fertilizer mix that'll kick off its growth into the summer.
Summer
Summer is when your lawn and shrubs grow like crazy! The name of the game in summer is maintenance. More than likely, you'll want to have your lawn mowed on at least a bi-weekly basis, though some prefer to do theirs weekly. You can do this yourself, or you can contract a landscaping company to handle your lawn maintenance for you. Don't forget to fertilize your lawn with a summertime mix. Your shrubs will most likely need to be trimmed back around this time, too.
Here in New York, summer is the perfect season for building hardscaping. Thinking of adding a paver patio or walking path to your garden? Considering putting in a retaining wall? If you've got any hardscaping projects in mind, now's the time to tackle them, either by building them yourself or outsourcing the work to a reliable landscaping company.
Fall
Fall is about getting everything ready for winter. Plant shrubs and trees from September to October to give their roots time to establish before they go dormant. It's also time to prep your lawn: fertilize it one last time, aerate it to enrich the soil, seed it to germinate new grass over the winter, and add preemergents to discourage weed growth when spring rolls around.
Winter
Most vegetation goes dormant when the ground freezes, so once winter comes around, you're done with the bulk of your landscaping for the year! There are little things you can do here and there to maintain your dormant landscape, such as pruning, leaf removal, and snow removal. Keeping your property free of debris over the winter will make things easier come spring. Mostly though, you should pat yourself on the back for a job well done, knowing that your landscaping is prepped and ready for the following spring.
